Darius Rucker saw great success this year with his single, “Wagon Wheel.” A cover of Old Crow Medicine Show’s version of the song, which was originally penned by Bob Dylan and finished by Old Crow Medicine Show’s Ketch Secor, Rucker’s recording went to No. 1 on both Billboard’s Country Airplay and Hot Country Songs charts. It also marked Rucker’s most successful song as a solo artist, peaking at No. 16 on the Billboard Hot 100.

With all the success of “Wagon Wheel,” Rucker thinks it deserves a GRAMMY. In an interview yesterday (Nov. 13) with The Dan Patrick Show, the country singer made some pretty lofty statements about the track and country music.

“‘Wagon Wheel’ did OK, that was a big hit. I’m waiting for the GRAMMY nomination, because I haven’t had one of those in a long time,” he said.

When asked by host Dan Patrick if the song would get nominated, Rucker was very adamant in his answer.

“If ‘Wagon Wheel’ doesn’t get nominated for a GRAMMY, country music is screwed. It’s as simple as that. I’m not saying I should win it, but it should be nominated.” Watch below at nine minutes in.

In an interview earlier this year with, Rucker explained how the idea to cover the song came about.

“When I heard ‘Wagon Wheel’ at my daughter’s high school talent contest, I don’t know what it was about the song, because I had heard the song before. But when I heard it there I just thought, ‘Man some day I’m going to cut the song for a record,’” he said. “It was really one of those lightning bolt things that I can’t even explain. I‘ve said that a lot but never cut the song, but with that I just really wanted to cut the song. I didn’t know how big it was until after it came out and then I realized on college campuses a lot of people knew it.”

Darius Rucker’s True Believers Tour kicks off Jan. 29 in Champaign, Ill.
