It’s a mish mash of history in Ariana Grande’s new video for “Right There.” Director Nev Todorovic, also the woman behind her “Almost Is Never Enough” video, ushers in a visual feast that spans the centuries…literally.
Romeo and Juliet was written by Shakespeare about two star-cross’d teens from Verona, Italy, circa the late 16th century, with performances going into the early 17th. But Todorovic seems to have taken the sensibilities of the 18th century revival of the play and mashed it together with the visual spectacle of Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet.
The costumes here evoke Enlightenment-era fashion and the kind of spectacle we associate with the royal courts across Europe at the time. Grande finds her Romeo/Leo in Patrick Schwarzenegger and Big Sean is there to do his verse and play the Priest in the Romeo and Juliet narrative. But the story is loosely told to give the lovers a dose of modern-day truth rather than a vial of poison.
The one thing that’s missing in the crowd of furries, astronauts and assorted Halloween costumes who surround them at the ball is a key part of the Romeo and Juliet story: being star-cross’d. There’s nothing to keep the lovers apart, which makes Grande’s take on the iconic play not exactly a tale of woe.
