“Some songs on the album are difficult to listen to at times,” Jason Derulo told Radio.com of his latest release, Tattoos, which dropped last week (Sept. 24). “There is a very emotional part of an album. When you hear those songs, they take you back to that dark moment that you don’t necessarily like to be in.”

Like the art that runs up his neck on the album cover, Derulo didn’t want to hide any aspect of his life on Tattoos. One of these “dark moments,” was showcased in title track “Tattoo.” Derulo said every relationship goes through its ups and downs, including him, and he decided to write about it all, the good and the bad.

The “Marry Me” singer wrote over 300 songs throughout the recording process, which he whittled down to five for his EP in the U.S. Originally planned as a 12-song album, international fans saw the complete LP drop last Monday (Sept 23).

In an interview earlier this year with Radio.com, Derulo explained that his life is revealed on each song of his release. “I’m very, very honest on this album,” he told Radio.com.

In addition to being very honest, Derulo said he wanted to made sure his release was a “roller coaster ride” for listeners.

“I wanted to be sure that the album was a roller coaster ride, that every single song was totally different from the last,” he explained. “My first album was written when I was 19-years-old. I wanted to be sure this album was far different from that one, to make sure that the growth was present. I’m 23 now. I really wanted this album to be a direct representation of who I am. I didn’t want to hide anything. This album, I wanted to tell a story.”

And the EP does tell a story. Tattoos covers every stage and emotion a relationship can bring, from the excitement of the honeymoon period on “The Other Side,” to the fun “Talk Dirty,” featuring 2 Chainz and the inevitable end on “Tattoo” and “Marry Me.”

The video for his second U.S. single, “Marry Me” debuted early last week and features girlfriend Jordin Sparks, who Derulo duets with on “Vertigo.” He dubs the track a “very sexy song” and said it was fun getting into the studio once they figured out how they both worked.

“In the beginning when we started to work together it wasn’t as fun, it wasn’t as easy. We had to try to find each other’s pallet and we finally found it. ‘Vertigo’ is one of the products of the happier studio sessions,” he said. “It’s very stripped down and piano based so you can hear every emotion. You can almost see the story in your head.”

Derulo is currently seeing success overseas with “Talk Dirty” as it dethroned Katy Perry’s “Roar” on the UK charts. A song about the international language of love, he says it’s completely different from his debut single “The Other Side,” and that he wanted to go in a new direction.

“This album just has so many different dimensions. I didn’t just want to go down this one lane. There are so many sides of me,” he said. “I wanted to be sure we covered all aspects of my personality and I also think it’s pretty boring to hear an album that’s one lane and continues to be on the same ride.”

He added: “This album is really a roller coaster. It will take you on twists and turns and you never know what to expect next.”
