All twerked out yet?

Thanks to Miley Cyrus‘ controversial performance with Robin Thicke on this year’s VMAs, the pop culture landscape is currently dominated by all things twerking, AKA the gratuitous booty-shaking dance that has scandalized everyone from the Parents Television Council to more puzzling pundits like actor Rob Lowe.

Longtime twerk advocate Diplo is preparing to ratchet up the heat even higher this weekend when he attempts to set a new world’s record for public booty-shaking at New York’s EDM music festival, Electric Zoo.

Having already help kick off the phenomenon with his own #ExpressYourself hashtag, which has generated thousands of pictures and videos of females getting their twerk on, Diplo has sent out a call via Instagram to organize a record-breaking “twerk wall” during his Sunday night set at the fest (see below).

The Major Lazer DJ/producer includes a call for twerking videos to help choose his aspiring dancers, promising free Electric Zoo tickets for “the top twerkers” (granted they’re at least 18 years old). Diplo also warns that submitted videos could be used to promote the contest.

It’s a well-intentioned disclaimer, as earlier this year Diplo offered his support for a group of San Diego high school students suspended for making their own twerking video on the school’s campus.

The three-day Electric Zoo fest where it’s all going down is set for this upcoming Labor Day weekend on NYC’s Randall’s Island, and will feature performances from such EDM superstars as Avicii, Tiesto and David Guetta.
