Style Files: The Haute Couture of the 2013 VMAs Red Carpet
Fashion-wise, the VMAs have stepped it up a notch in the last few years. In a major change from the past, we’re now seeing stars decked out in high-end designer duds, as well as more and more female attendees doing a quick change from the red carpet to their show wear — a move usually reserved for presenters at big shows like the Oscars.
Several singers made big splashes on this year’s red carpet. Here’s a look at who wore what from the world of high fashion.
One of the evening’s most talked-about looks was Taylor Swift in Hervé Leger by Max Azria — although the talk was mostly about her Marilyn Monroe-esque hair as opposed to the cut-down-to-there bandage dress.
The biggest red carpet show-stopper was Rita Ora, in an Alexandre Vauthier dress with a feather train that required three people to move it.
Ellie Goulding went head to toe nude, in a studded, sheer dress with suede Brian Atwood pumps.
Katy Perry halfway stuck to her new, more mature, more covered-up style in Emanuel Ungaro, but got playful with a multi-colored grill and some gold accents.
Iggy Azalea lead the pack of see-through and sparkly dresses with this look from Emilio Pucci, recalling both the art deco feel of The Great Gatsby and a Botticelli figure all at once.
Closely followed by Selena Gomez, who mirrored BFF Taylor Swift’s navy pick while sticking to the sheer and sparkly feel that was on trend in this Versace town.
And finally, Ciara, who pulled off a monochrome look with sheer and sparkles from Givenchy.
And then there was Lady Gaga, who did the VMA red carpet goth-style in Prabal Gurung.
And love or hate Miley Cyrus’s look, she was rocking vintage Dolce & Gabbana.
