The Calling’s Alex Band Abducted, Assaulted & Robbed As Group Announces Comeback
L.A. pop-rock band the Calling, best known for 2001 hit “Wherever You Go,” has made the startling announcement that the group’s lead singer, Alex Band, was abducted, assaulted and robbed by unknown assailants in the city of Lapeer, Mich., over the weekend.
According to CNN, Band was snatched off the streets of downtown Lapeer in the early morning hours of Sunday (Aug. 18) by two men in a blue minivan. The singer told Lapeer Police Sgt. Craig Gormley that he’d been “assaulted, robbed, and dropped off on another street.” An unnamed member of the Calling picked him up and took him to the emergency room of the McLaren Lapeer Region hospital, where he was treated and released.
Coincidentally, the news of Band’s mugging came on the heels of the Calling announcing an impending comeback on the music scene, having just played well-received shows in Atlantic City and at the Lapeer Days Festival (the Calling’s last release was 2004′s Two).
Band has taken to the Calling’s Facebook page to make his official statement, saying he was abducted from a mini-mall and beaten with a police baton while his captors pointed a gun at his head and demanded he hand over his “Hollywood money.”
Band also states that he begged for his life, telling the men he was about to become a father. After Band endured another beating, he was told, “we don’t kill fathers,” before being left alongside a deserted railroad track.
The singer’s injuries are extensive. Band reports a fractured lower spine, 15 stitches to his face, three broken teeth and substantial bruising.
“I never thought my unborn child would be my savior,” Band wrote. “I am grateful to be alive and I know that I am destined for bringing my music back to my fans.”
With Band battling addiction issues since the band’s unofficial dissolution in 2005, rumors have already begun circulating tying the incident to drugs. It’s a claim Band vehemently denies.
“I take my rehabilitation very seriously I was near death due to this unbelievable situation and the rumors are categorically false and not a hoax as reported,” he insisted.
According to the press release announcing the Calling’s comeback, the group is “in the midst of signing a major record deal and are setting up a global tour to bring forth their music to a world-wide fervent fan base.”
Among the Calling’s upcoming plans include releasing The Calling: 8 Track, which features Band and an all-new lineup performing acoustic versions of their biggest hits, with a new album slated for 2014.
