It’s all happening for Jason Derulo. The 23-year-old singer is gearing up for the release of his new album, Tattoos, on September 24. After the success of lead single “The Other Side” — the No. 2 most added song of all time at Top 40 radio — Derulo now has a new UK single “Talk Dirty” featuring 2 Chainz, which will be featured on the LP alongside collabs with The Game, Pitbull, and girlfriend Jordin Sparks.
Radio.com sat down with Derulo to get the inside scoop of what fans can expect from his new release. He was rather forthcoming with how forthcoming his album was.
“I’m very, very honest on this album,” he told Radio.com. “I’m very open. Some songs on the album are difficult to listen to at times. There is a very emotional part of the album.”
After a neck injury that forced him to take a break from music, Derulo is thankful for the success of “The Other Side.”
“Especially after the rough year that I had, to have this comeback was really crazy. To hear my stuff on the radio was like hearing my stuff on the radio for the first time all over again,” he confessed. “Same butterflies, same nerves. I think that’s the human element of this whole thing. Having that feeling keeps me grounded, keeps me humble and keeps me pushing further.”
Derulo is pushing himself further on his forthcoming release. He had written over 300 songs and had to narrow them down to 12, a process that was difficult.
“I wanted to be sure that the album was a roller coaster ride, that every single song was totally different from the last,” he explained. “My first album was written when I was 19-years-old. I wanted to be sure this album was far different from that one, to make sure that the growth was present. I’m 23 now. I really wanted this album to be a direct representation of who I am. I didn’t want to hide anything. This album, I wanted to tell a story.”
One story he thinks fans will be able to decipher is the track he wrote with Sparks, called “Vertigo.” A track he dubs as being a “very sexy song,” he said it took a while for him and Sparks to merge their work styles.
“It was a lot of fun actually. In the beginning when we started to work together it wasn’t as fun, it wasn’t as easy,” he admitted. “We had to try to find each other’s pallet and we finally found it. ‘Vertigo’ is one of the products of the happier studio sessions. It’s very stripped down and piano based so you can hear every emotion. You can almost see the story in your head.”
One thing that may shock fans is that they won’t be hearing Derulo famously sing his name on any of the tracks on Tattoos.
“I actually retired singing my name. It was something that became a craze oddly enough. I don’t know how, I don’t know why, but it’s just one of those things that get stuck in people’s head. But, it’s retired. It was fun while it lasted,” he laughed. “That’s the end of a chapter and the beginning of a new one.”
Tattoos will be released on September 24 on Beluga Heights Records.
