Update (8/14, 11:45 a.m.): “Control HOF” has been taken down from virtually all corners of the Internet, including Funkmaster Flex’s site. So you can’t really hear Kendrick’s widely debated verse.

This is technically Big Sean’s song, but when you’re writing news about a sinking ship, do you write about the people drowning or the hero that saved them? The hero in this case is Kendrick Lamar, who shows up in this Big Sean bonus track “Control HOF” premiered by Funkmaster Flex last night on Hot 97. Kendrick delivers something far more raw, inspired, and dynamic than either Big Sean or Jay Electronica.

Kendrick Lamar’s 2012 album Good Kid, M.A.A.D. City is filled with all manners of fire from the Black Hippy member, but situated between G.O.O.D. Music member Big Sean and Roc Nation signee Jay Electronica, it just makes it stand out all the more.

Most notable, perhaps, is Kendrick Lamar’s tough love for his contemporaries. He has a litany of names that he calls out: “I’m usually homeboys with the same ni**as I’m rhyming with/ But this is hip-hop and them ni**as should know what time it is/ And that goes for Jermaine Cole, Big K.R.I.T., Wale, Pusha T, Meek Mill, A$AP Rocky, Drake, Big Sean, Jay Electron’, Tyler, Mac Miller/ I got love for you all but I’m trying to murder you ni**as.”

UPDATE: Meek Mill, in an interview this morning with CBS Philadelphia, said that the verse “Definitely wasn’t insulting … I don’t think he was trying to insult any of us. We all know each other personally. He was naming everybody, me, Drake…”

When pressed if Meek would respond to Kendrick, he said, “I’m not going to make no diss record for Kendrick Lamar, but we’re going to get competitive, we’re going to have some fun.”

A few other rappers also offered their $0.02. Pusha T responded to Kendrick Lamar in a tweet, saying, “I hear u loud and clear my ni**a…”

And, as music blog Pigeons and Planes reports, Lupe Fiasco was not impressed:
