JAY Z Loses The Hyphen From His Name

Was it auctioned off for charity? Lost in a high-stakes bet during another trans-Atlantic flight on a private jet? A typo gone rogue?

Sometimes, the truth really is in the details.

Eagle-eyed Jay Z fans have started to notice something different about his name in album credits, on Spotify and iTunes, and his website – specifically, that the hyphen that existed for years in his moniker has suddenly vanished. And in most cases, he’s all-caps “JAY Z.” Next stop, symbols!

According to Billboard Editor-in-Chief Joe Levy’s Twitter account, Jay Z’s label Roc Nation alerted him to the official moniker update:

While Levy’s tweet has turned Jay Z’s subtle reinvention into legitimate news, the rapper’s publicist Jana Fleishman has revealed that the hyphen has been gone longer than the rest of the world might realize.

“Dude, we haven’t used the hyphen since 2010,” Fleishman told Complex in a statement.

No response when Radio.com reached out for comment from Hova’s camp.

Predictably, a parody Twitter account for the missing hyphen has already gone live on Twitter.

Why Jay Z has chosen to eliminate the hyphen is still a cause for speculation, but a look back at his discography shows that it was already history by the time he released the Watch the Throne collaboration album with Kanye West.

The hyphen-free rapper is still basking in the glow of first-week sales numbers for his latest full-length, Magna Carta Holy Grail, which enjoyed the second-best debut of 2013 so far, selling 527,000 copies in its first week. That’s in addition to the one million copies sold to Samsung for their much-discussed free download promotion app for Galaxy phones, which is currently under investigation for privacy violations.
