Lady Gaga Will Release ‘ARTPOP’ This November – As An Album & An App
By Shannon Carlin
Little Monsters, the wait is finally over. Lady Gaga has officially announced that her third album, ARTPOP, will be out on November 11.
The singer took to her Facebook page Friday (July 12) morning to let fans know that the follow-up to 2011’s Born This Way will not only be an album, but will also be an official app built by TechHAUS, the technological branch of HAUS OF GAGA.
In a Facebook post—which features a photo (possibly the album cover?) of Gaga wearing a see-through mask and the word ARTPOP tattooed on her forearm–she explains that the app is a “musical and visual engineering that combines music, art, fashion and technology with a new interactive worldwide community—‘the auras.’” This new online community Gaga has created (different than her current social networking site, Little Monsters.com) will use social media to bring “ARTculture into POP into a reverse Warholian expedition.”
The app allows fans to interact with one another, chatting not only about Gaga’s latest album, but share their own art projects. ARTPOP, Gaga explains, is her way of bringing the music industry into the future. (Bjork was the first to try this concept with her last album, the app-enhanced Biophilia) The singer hopes this new medium will help fans feel like they are experiencing the creative process right alongside her.
“ARTPOP could mean anything,” the statement says. “But for her, this is a celebration of obsession.”
Gaga began teasing ARTPOP last year, but was forced to take a break after undergoing hip surgery. She then cancelled her Born This Way Ball Tour and purchased herself a 24-karat gold wheelchair that she christened Emma to help her get around. Though, as Pop Justice points out, maybe Gaga’s always planned to release her album in November. A tweet from 9 months ago reveals that she was already teasing the conception of ARTPOP.
But just when fans might have worried that they would hear nothing from Gaga in 2013, she posted a photo of herself on 2013 that showed her back in the studio and last month, showed up for her first public appearance since her hip surgery during the launch of Pride weekend in New York City.
Gaga’s fans will get a little taste of the album on August 19, when the singer drops the record’s first single. No word yet on the title of the song. It will be her first new single since she released “Marry The Night” in November 2011.
According to a statement, Gaga will also host an art show on November 10 where she will exhibit Haus of Gaga’s projects that include collaborations with other artists like Marina Abramovic and Jeff Koons. No details have been given as of now on where this event will be held.
