Ne-Yo is best known to fans for moody tracks like “Closer” and “Miss Independent,” but some of his biggest successes have actually come from his work as a songwriter for other artists.

The crooner co-penned Beyonce’s 2007 hit “Irreplaceable,” and is now speaking out on his latest work with Bey for her upcoming fifth studio album, expected this year.

“I’m still putting stuff together for Beyonce’s album,” he told Billboard. “They’re still trying to figure out what they want that to be, which I’m not mad at.”

Bey has reportedly been working on the record since last summer when she met with the likes of Ryan Tedder, The-Dream and Sia in the Hamptons to collaborate on potential album material. While the effort is months in the making and remains unscheduled for release, Ne-Yo says it will be worth the wait.

“Beyonce’s the kind of artist where you’re not gonna see it till it’s right,” he said in the interview. “And her fans — they love her so they’ll be patient.”

No official single has been released, but fans have had a taste of what to expect with new tracks appearing in recent Pepsi and H&M commercials, along with a contribution to animated movie Epic‘s soundtrack, “Rise Up.” Below, listen to clips of “Bow Down” and “I Been On,” which Beyonce released back in March.

Ne-Yo has apparently bonded with the Knowles-Carter clan, as he’s also been hitting the studio with Jay-Z.

“I went in, I did a session where I laid down a couple hooks but I have no idea what’s going to be kept,” he said. “I heard some of the new stuff. It’s amazing. With Jay-Z it’s hard not to be amazing.”

The singer added that Jay’s unique approach to songwriting has inspired him in his own work, even using inspiration from Twitter and Instagram while penning his latest single with Cher Lloyd, “It’s All Good.”

“I’ve sat in sessions with Jay-Z where he doesn’t write anything down. He’ll come up with the most incredible triple entendre all in his head — it’s amazing,” he said. “That was the main thing that attracted me was just trying something new, which could be a new revenue stream in that regard.”

Also in the works is Ne-Yo’s contribution to Celine Dion’s upcoming album, not to mention his own record, which is still in the conceptual phase.

Despite his latest Hot 100 hit, “Let Me Love You,” taking heavy EDM influence, he told Billboard that his new album will be “predominantly R&B.”

“I’m really excited about what’s happening in R&B right now,” he said. “I want to see what my place is in the whole thing. That’s not to say I’m abandoning the EDM genre. I’ve gotten so much unimaginable love from that fanbase and that genre. It’s really rare that an entire genre of music allows an artist from a different genre to come and live there. By no means am I abandoning that, but I definitely know I need to take care of my core — the thing that got me here in the first place. I don’t feel like I’ve given it the attention it deserves.”
