‘Electric Lady’ Janelle Monáe Teams Up With Prince And Miguel
Janelle Monáe’s upcoming album may be called The Electric Lady, but the singer has recruited some serious male talent to lend a hand on the record. Prince and Miguel are the latest collaborators to be revealed, according to Billboard.
While she couldn’t say much, Monáe told the magazine that Prince mentored her through the musical process and that the pair became “great friends.”
“It’s a beautiful thing to have a friend — someone who cares about your career, and wants to see you go far and to push boundaries and shake up the world — give whatever they possibly can to the cause,” she said in the interview.
The singer added that she jumped at the opportunity to work with Prince, who does not frequently work with other artists.
“I had a chance to produce an icon,” she said. “It’s not every day that he collaborates. I’m honored and humbled that he trusted me. He is forever my friend, and I am forever indebted. I can’t say too much else about it.”
Monáe did not reveal the name of the duo’s song, but did add that Miguel will appear on Electric Lady track “Primetime,” which samples the Pixies’ 1988 classic “Where is My Mind?”
The album’s first single, “Q.U.E.E.N.,” dropped in April and features Erykah Badu against a funk-influenced beat. The track, her first release since 2010’s ArchAndroid, has sold over 30,000 downloads, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
While Monáe remains tight-lipped on the details of The Electric Lady (including an official release date), Billboard reports that a tour will follow this fall.
