Lesson learned: it pays to research all the bands on a festival lineup.  Case in point: some band called “Dehaan” who no one ever heard of were scheduled to play  Metallica’s Orion Music Festival Saturday (June 8) in Detroit. The reason no one ever heard of them?  Well, because they don’t exist. Dehaan turned out to be Metallica, who performed a surprise set on one of the festival’s smaller stages, performing their debut album, Kill ‘Em All, in its entirety.  (Metallica wasn’t scheduled to play Saturday; they headline Sunday’s show).

James Hetfield of Metallica hinted on his Instagram page early in the day, “Don’t miss Dehaan! #MUYA #mff#UwillRegretMissingThem#IfUdoUmightKillEmAll #winkWink#getIt?” He even came out asking the crowd “Does anyone know who they are? They’re from Baltimore. Nobody knows anything about them but us.” Instagram savvy fans picked up on the hint and were waiting for the band’s set, and after they started, many more festival-goers swarmed to the stage.

Dehaan’s Kill ‘Em All set lasted nearly 55 minutes. Also on hand for Dehaan’s performance was Ray Burton, father of the late Cliff Burton. Burton was the Metallica’s bass player on Kill ‘Em All.

At the end of their set Hetfield told the crowd, “This is the last one for Dehaan. We appreciate your support and hope to see you again somewhere.” And if you are wondering why they were called “Dehaan,” it is the last name of the leading actor, Dave Dehaan, in Metallica’s upcoming film Metallica Through the Never.

Metallica play their scheduled Orion set on Sunday. MORE PHOTOS: To see a full gallery of photos from Orion, go to CBS Detroit.
