As Thirty Seconds To Mars gear up for the May 21st release of their fourth album, LOVE LUST FAITH + DREAMS, they sat down with Radio.com to explain why the release marks their new beginning.

The rockers chatted about the meaning behind the record’s four-word title, why they chose “Up In The Air” as the first single and the famous artist who loaned them his painting for the album’s cover.

Watch our video interview below.

Every word in the title of the band’s new album is mentioned throughout each of its 12 songs. In the case of the band’s first single, “Up In The Air,” two of the words were used: love and lust. In a statement, frontman Jared Leto said their newest song “The Race,” is a song “about the madness of love + life, the insanity of dreams, and about how – at times – prey can become the predator.” (Watch the lyric video below.)

But as for why they picked these four words in particular, Leto told us, “[they] really sum up the record in a really pointed way. It’s a new beginning for us. It’s an entirely new chapter of our lives.”

With this new chapter came a new look courtesy of Damien Hirst. The British artist lent Thirty Seconds his painting, Isonicotinic Acid Ethyl Ester 2010 – 2011, which is now the album’s cover. Leto said the British artist’s piece from his Spot series, which seems to incorporate every color of the rainbow, represents the record as a whole.

“It’s alive with lush colors,” Leto said of the music. “It’s vibrant and full of energy.”
