The stars went punk at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (Met) Gala in New York City on Monday (May 6). But how punk rock did they really go?

Some stars wore leather, while others wore lace–all black of course. Some even dared to wear spikes (beware of Cameron Diaz’s sharp belt) or safety pins, like Carey Mulligan, whose black Balenciaga dress used one as a fastener.

Lots of stars had fun with their makeup, channeling their inner Debbie Harry, who herself donned an all-black ensemble from Tommy Hilfiger. Below we grade a few different looks from stars that dared to go punk.

Miley Cyrus in Marc Jacobs

With bleached spikes and a see through mesh ensemble, Miley said she was a “punk rock Morticia.” That’s a good way to describe this very extreme look. It seems Miley really can’t be tamed.

Katy Perry in Dolce & Gabbana

For Katy’s golden look she channeled Joan of Arc, one of history’s greatest punks. We appreciate the California Girl’s nod to anti-establishment (very punk rock), but her look is a little more Medieval Times than The Ramones.

Kim Kardashian & Kanye in Givenchy

Kimye came, they saw and they conquered. Not so much fashionwise–though we do appreciate Kim’s commitment to floral–but musically. Kanye performed a new song, “I Am A God,” and apparently all hell broke loose in the museum. When you compare yourself to a God you definitely up your punk cred. We’ll forgive him for the bland ensemble and assume he put all his creative energy behind the performance.

Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift in J. Mendel

Taylor went for a black and gold grecian look with see through mesh panels. While her kohl eyeliner gives her a darker look, we’re afraid she’s just too pretty to be punk.

Beyoncé in Givenchy

Is there anything more punk than showing up late to your own event? We don’t think so. Bey strolled the red carpet in her knee high boots, studded belt and opera length gloves, minutes before the event was to begin. She even had a personal stylist waiting in the wings to fluff her dress for the cameras. Now, let’s be honest, no punk would really care about what they looked like in a silly photo. But can you even judge the Queen B?
