Bruce Springsteen has collaborated with the punk rock band Dropkick Murphys on a single that will raise funds for the Boston Marathon bombing victims. Springsteen connected with the Boston band for a re-recording of their song “Rose Tattoo.”

“Bruce actually called us up the day of the bombing and asked what he could do to help,” Dropkick Murphys guitarist James Lynch told Springsteen fan site Backstreets. “We didn’t have to reach out. He was there for us.”

While Springsteen has long been a very mainstream stadium headliner, this isn’t the first time he has crossed paths with punk rock bands. Bruce has rubbed elbows with punk rockers for decades: in the ’70s, he co-wrote punk icon Patti Smith’s biggest hit, “Because The Night.” A few years later, the late Joey Ramone asked Bruce to write a song for The Ramones. Springsteen came up with “Hungry Heart,” which his manager convinced him to keep for himself.

Last year, Social Distortion’s Mike Ness joined Springsteen on stage in California (Springsteen guested on Ness’ first solo album, 1999′s Cheating At Solitaire).  At 2009′s Hard Rock Calling Festival, Springsteen joined punk rock band Gaslight Anthem on stage. At the same festival Gaslight frontman Brian Fallon joined Springsteen and the E Street Band for “No Surrender.”

A number of other acts – including Bouncing Souls and Against Me! – have paid tribute to Springsteen via a series of covers of his songs posted to YouTube‘s “Hangin’ Out On E Street” page.

In the past, the Dropkick Murphys have joined Springsteen onstage as well; DM guitarist Tim Brennan famously proposed to his girlfriend from the stage at a Springsteen show in  2009.

According to Springsteen’s official website, the song is expected to hit iTunes this week.
