Scotty McCreery has come a long way since his American Idol win in 2011. Currently enrolled at North Carolina State University, the singer is also hard at work on his follow-up to his 2011 debut, Clear as Day.

In a recent interview with Billboard, McCreery revealed that he’s finishing up his next album.

“We’re in the studio right now and we’ve got about 12 songs cut,” he said.

McCreery splits his time between class Monday through Wednesday and then tours Thursday through Sunday. His new track “See You Tonight” is a song he’s particularly excited about, due to his involvement in the songwriting process.

“I had a hand in writing it,” he said. “That is one of those things I didn’t have a chance to do on the first record because coming off Idol as the winner, you have a deadline for the first record. We were on the Idol tour as well so we were trying to squeeze it all in.”

During a recent visit to Charlotte radio station The New 103.7, McCreery performed his new song for listeners and then took a few questions from fans. McCreery revealed, among other things, that ACM Best New Artist winner Florida Georgia Line is his favorite country act right now.

“I had a chance to meet them, great dudes and great music,” he said.

McCreery isn’t the only one who’s a big fan. Taylor Swift hand-selected the duo to join her on her current RED Tour, and the guys will be touring with Luke Bryan on his Dirt Road Diaries Tour through the fall.

McCreery’s still-untitled second album does not yet have a release date.
