Luke Bryan was crowned Entertainer of the Year at tonight’s Academy of Country Music Awards (see the full winners list). And while many were likely surprised — this was Luke’s first time even being nominated for this award — there may be no one more shocked about his win than Luke himself.
As he took the stage to accept the trophy, he worked hard to hold back tears. But at the same time, he was genuinely thrilled, grinning from ear to ear.
“I don’t know what to say,” he finally admitted. “Thank you guys so much, fans, for doing this to me. For making my life what it is. What I always wanted to be was just a country singer who got to ride on a tour bus and show up on a stage and play music every night.”
“I just started headlining, this doesn’t even….”
Yes, it’s true — Luke has only begun headlining, unlike every other artist he was up against. But what the win shows is that he’s got the fanbase to back him up (it’s a fan-voted award). And so when you look at it from that perspective, yes, Luke, it does actually make sense.
“I swear to God, every time I step on stage it is a blessing to play for fans. […] Thank you, country radio. This is the defining moment of my life and I will never take it for granted. Thank you for letting me host, too.”
