Grammy-winning artist Frank Ocean has already developed his own style sense, from high fashion takes on the street wear favored by his Odd Future crew to the signature headband he often sports in concert.
Now the “Pyramids” singer is working as a bona fide male model, posing in a series of Polaroid photos for New York fashion label Band of Outsiders’ spring menswear line. The informal photos shots were taken by the label’s founder and creative director, Scott Sternberg at the Los Angeles Times building in downtown L.A.
The pair worked together previously on Ocean’s performance of the song “Forest Gump” at this year’s Grammy awards ceremony, with the artist wearing a custom yellow Band of Outsiders tuxedo.
“It was inspired by the idea of protest, and counterculture images from 1950s and ’60s photographers like Wallace Berman and Dennis Stock,” Sternberg told The Hollywood Reporter about the photos. “The look for the shoot was derived from that show, but each individual look was tweaked so they were closer to Frank’s style.”
Sternberg’s casual, slightly washed-out Polariod style is reminiscent of the infamous Calvin Klein TV ads from the 1990s that were eventually band for being too provocative.
“The medium becomes even more of an asset when we’re shooting someone busy and famous,” Sternberg said of the Polariod format, having shot such celebrities as Josh Brolin, Chris Paul and Kendrick Lamar for similar campaigns. “The setups are quick so we can get a lot in, and there’s something about having the physical images there that helps gain a sense of trust. At this point, it probably doesn’t matter what medium we use to shoot these, but I’ll definitely miss doing it this way when the film runs out.”
Frank Ocean and his Odd Future cohorts Tyler the Creator and Earl Sweatshirt were recently added to the bill for Scotland’s 2013 T In The Park festival alongside previously announced acts including Rihanna, Mumford and Sons and Phoenix.
