Amid a few questions with regard to naming her new tour the Mrs. Carter Show, Beyonce comes strong with her first new track in years “Bow Down” when she delivers the line, ” I took some time to live my life/but don’t think I’m just his little wife.” If there was any question about Beyonce ruling her own world, “Bow Down intends to address them.
Beyonce reclaims not only her throne but her affiliation to Houston, giving H-Town numerous name checks. The track, produced by Hit-Boy, is rife with profanity — perhaps not what everyone had in mind for her first return track after becoming a mother. Buttoned up Beyonce is apparently taking a backseat to the self-confident, anthemic woman who sings “Bow Down” and instructs all comers, “Don’t forget it/bow down bitches.”
The track is mashed up with “I Been On.” A tricked-out track with the slowed down sound of Houston’s chopped and screwed signature sound of the early 2000s, when Beyonce was still reaching for the penacle of fame she’d find with Destiny’s Child. It offers shout outs to Willie D of the Geto Boys and Pimp C of UGK. The former is a legend in the Houston rap scene, while the latter originates from Port Arthur, the oil drilling down south of Houston on the Gulf of Mexico. The track was promoted with a piece of art crafted from a photo of the singer’s childhood. It depicts her in a fluffy pink dress surrounded by trophies as an adolescent.
Uploaded to her Soundcloud on Sunday, March 17, this marks the first new music we’ve heard from Beyonce’s already trumpeted return, following her Superbowl performance, HBO documentary Life Is But A Dream and covers of Vogue and GQ magazines.
