After being detained on charges of child pornography and conspiracy to rape a child, 35-year-old British singer Ian Watkins of the metal band Lostprophets is now set to stand trial on the grim allegations.
As reported in the Guardian, Watkins has vehemently refuted the charges, releasing a statement via his lawyer, Sarah Willams-Martin, after the case was addressed at Cardiff crown court this week.
“Mr. Watkins furiously denies all of the charges and allegations made,” reads the statement. “He intends to fight to the bitter end to clear his name. He wishes to thank the fans, family and friends for the constant love and support they have given and continue to give throughout this testing time.”
Watkins is being tried for allegedly conspiring with an unnamed 24-year-old woman to rape a one-year-old girl. Another unnamed woman, age 20, is also being charged with additional crimes, including possessing, making and distributing child pornography. The crimes were alleged to have occurred between May and December of 2012.
The judge in the case has set an eventual trial date to begin the week of June 15, with Watkins still remanded in custody.
Watkins co-founded Lostprophets in 1997, with the band going on to produce five studio albums, the most recent being Weapons, which was released in April 2012. They’ve sold more than 3.5 million records worldwide, with two singles reaching the British top 10.
