Style Files: Taking Britt Nicole’s Tutu From The Stage To The Streets
Dressing for the stage lets a performer break all the rules. There are the over-the-top costumes of characters like Lady Gaga and Katy Perry and the sparkly, personality-driven style of Nicki Minaj and Taylor Swift, but more low-key pop girls, like 2013 GRAMMY nominee Britt Nicole, keep it simple enough to go from stage to real life.
Nicole talked to Radio.com about what she likes to wear for live performances — and we pulled some ready-to-wear dresses to help you get her look for an everyday style.
“As far as my fashion when I go on stage, it’s completely different than what I’m comfortable in [but] I do feel like I have to be comfortable on stage because I’m moving a lot, I’m dancing… so I have to have something that I can move in,” Nicole explained. “When I’m trying on clothes for a tour coming up, I’m in the dressing room posing, dancing, holding my mic. I’m like, ‘OK, how do I feel in this? Can I lift my arms? What all can I do?’
“The last thing I bought for the most recent tour I was one is this really big tutu skirt. It goes out really far and has this gold top. I wear it with gold Converse. It’s this kind of prissy, really fun pop look and then the Converse make it more fun, more edgy.”
The secret to pulling off a tutu in the wild? Look for tulle skirts. This cap sleeved tulle dress with sequined top from Macy’s, featuring a back zip and v-back, has the feel of a tutu but with a jean jacket could easily be a daytime or work outfit.
The same dress is available in plus sizes as well, with an A-line cut. It is flattering to all body types and would work nicely paired with a short-cut, 3/4-length sleeve blazer in a dark color.
Another option for daytime is a longer tulle skirt, like this sleeveless version. This illusion skirt has the fairytale feel of a tutu with length that makes it appropriate for day-to-night wear. The jeweled waistband adds an extra princess touch.
